Welcome everyone. I’m so pleased you’ve dropped by for a visit and hope you enjoy our website. This website is a continuous work in progress (please put an emphasis on ‘work’, these words don’t come easily to me – I much prefer to be out in the sunshine with my horses), but don’t be a stranger and please drop by again.
Morgans are my passion. I unapologetically believe they are the ultimate horse. They are a fantastic family horse, a serious competition horse that can excel in any discipline, they are intelligent, have a great sense of humour and are breathtakingly beautiful. Until you’ve had the pleasure of owning a morgan, you haven’t really experienced horse ownership. That is - when the horse owns you! Biased? You bet I am, and proud of it.
Wirraway Morgan Stud began in 1994 when we purchased two purebreds from Mt Tawonga Stud. We were the first morgan stud i Queensland and are one of the oldest established studs in Australia.
We live on the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland, South East Queensland, Australia and consider ourselves extremely blessed to live in such a beautiful part of the world. Our stud is located at the base of a beautiful valley in the Blackall Ranges. An area of worldwide renown for raising tough, athletic endurance horses. Our foals are foaled down close to the house and when old enough, let out to stretch their legs and use themselves galloping and skylarking over the side of the mountain. We believe this ‘play’ helps them grow into strong athletic horses with a fully developed skeleton, muscles and ligaments and capable of handling themselves over all terrains.
We believe in handling the foals when they are first born and then letting them grow and to be horses with as much free exercise as is possible. They are not over handled and are left to be educated by the herd in such things as respect and good manners.
We are not a huge stud and began by breeding partbreds as many morgan people did back in those early days. I competed my partbred morgan gelding Mt Tawonga Swagman extremely successfully in endurance. I still have fond memories of the faces on other riders as Swag kicked into his ‘overdrive’ trot and left the field for dead. He could maintain that trot for miles. He’d power effortlessly up hills (mountains) and there was nothing that could keep up with him. Every endurance and event rider really should try and experience that big ground covering morgan trot that they can maintain for hours with ease. There are more and more partbred morgans competing in endurance now with great success.
Our purebred program is really starting to come together. We are extremely excited about what we are putting on the ground. There are some real diamonds in our paddocks and can’t wait for them to be of age to be put under saddle and start working. But know, everyday we give them now will give them good sound years in the future and are exercising patience. Our first purebred is in the Northern Territory, working in a mustering camp. Our next purebreds are being started under saddle at the moment. Exciting times.
The most exciting thing by far to happen at Wirraway Morgan Stud was the birth of Wirraway Trademark aka Brik. He is the culmination of years of research and dreaming of the perfect morgan sport horse. And for this, we are forever in debt to a lovely lady, MaryAnn Schaffer. Knowing of my desire to breed morgan sport horses, she offered us a lease on the premium sport horse mare in the USA, Fox Brush Custom Design – aka Rikki (Funquest Eric x Bowood Ellusive Dream) Eric and Dream are both Morgan Sport Horse Winners. This award is extremely hard earned and only a few horses in history have been able to attain such a level of success. We bred Rikki to Primavera Brio, a beautiful buckskin stallion by the infamous Primavera Valdez. Valdez’s fan club is so great, that he is only morgan stallion to be honoured with his very own internet chat list. Wirraway Trademark is extremely special and his breeding is unique and irreplaceable, combining three very famous and accomplished morgan sport horses in the second line of his pedigree. There is no other morgan with this elite pedigree. We owe MaryAnn a huge debt of gratitude for allowing us this unique opportunity and John and Joyce Hutchinson for allowing us to use Brio. Thank you. MaryAnn and I jokingly named the unborn foal Brikki VP – B (Brio) and Rikki. VP = Voodoo Princess. Believing that with faith and the generosity of good people, magic really does happy. On the 24th March, 2008 Brikki VP was born and became known as Brikki VP - Virtual Prince... after all, his creation was planned over the internet. Both Rikki and Brikki arrived at Wirraway Morgan Stud on the 29th September, 2008 after a delay in quarantine due to another EI scare. There have photos of their travels on the Gallery Page.
Our goals for breeding the perfect morgan horse are simple. Breed the best to the best and give them the best chance in life to grow strong and athletic.
We’ve put our hearts and souls into producing and raising the best possible individual and feel duty bound when we entrust these horses to only the best of homes. The best of homes is not always the home with the best of incomes. We invest so much into each and every one of them, the thought that goes into their breeding and the love and respect that goes into their raising, we offer each and everyone with pride and are committed to ensuring they are partnered to become someone’s horse of a lifetime. And offer a 100% return and re-homing policy if necessary.
